我有一个梦想 I have a dream

我有一个梦想 wǒ yǒu yí gè mèng xiǎng

Let’s practice formal Chinese. Most of the Chinese stories on this site use mandarin vocabularies that are for daily use. I decide to add some diversity by introducing to you the extract of Martin Luther King,Jr’s (1929-1968) famous speech: I have a dream.

In this Chinese translation of Martin Luther King, Jr’s I have a dream, the overall tone is formal and powerful. You may notice from your learning Chinese experience that we tend to have two sets of vocabularies (if not more): formal & informal. The differences can be very big. In speeches, newspapers, announcements, etc very formal Chinese expressions are used. Here are a few formal expressions in simple Chinese, which you might already know:

  • 此时此刻 cǐ shí cǐ kè: 现在, 在这个时候
  • 共叙 gòng xù:  一起说, 聊天
  • 如同..般 rú tóng ..bān: 好像…
  • 有朝一日yǒu zhāo yí rì: 将来有一天

This speech also mentions many places, which we translate phonetically into Chinese (thus sound funny:). For example:

  • 密西西比 mì xī xī bǐ  – Mississippi
  • 亚拉巴马 yà lā bā mǎ – Alabama
  • 佐治亚 zuǒ zhì yà – Georgia
  • 路易斯安那 lù yì sī ān nà – Louisiana

or translated into a combination of meaning and sounds, e.g:

卡罗莱纳 nán kǎ luó lái nà – South Carolina

I love this speech “I have a dream”, because it is so encouraging and motivating. I hope you’ll find the text useful in practice Chinese.
