Social Media in China

No facebook, no twitter. What are the social media platforms used by Chinese? In this article, we will present 5 most popular social channels:

 

Tencent QQ ( 腾讯 téng xùn QQ)

[qq] It started with an instant messaging software service, and also offers a variety of other services, including online social games, music, shopping, micro blogging, and group and voice. In the beginning it worked the same way as MSN but included more functions. Until 2013, there are 798.2 million active accounts. It is available in more than 8 languages: www.imqq.com

 

WeChat (微信 wēi xìn)

[wechat] It is a mobile phone text and voice messaging communication service which works similar as WhatsApp.  You can download it for Android, IPhone, Blackberry, windows phone, and Symbian phones. Until now it supports more than 12 languages: www.wechatapp.com

 

Renren (人人 rén rén)

[renren] It is a social network which uses your name as account, and looks similar as Facebook in terms of design and functions. “ren” means “people” in Chinese. ”renren” means “everyone” join in the system. Until now, renren has more than 170 million registered users, mainly university students and white-collars: www.renren.com

 

Sina Weibo (新浪微博 xīn làng wēi bó)

[sina] The Chinese equivalent of twitter, it is the most powerful social service at this moment. Users can post personal updates with a limit of 140 Chinese characters. You can also post photos and videos. Users can also message each other.  Many celebrities use this social media for marketing purpose. TaoBao (淘宝 táo bǎo)

[taobao] TaoBao is a Chinese language website for C2C(customer to customer) online shopping, it is the chinese equivalent of EBay and Amazon. Taobao offers free listings to seller and introduce website features designed to better cater to local consumers, such as an intent messaging tool for facilitating buyer-seller communication and an escrow based payment tool, Alipay.
